X5 Laser Measurement: Greater Flexibility for Difficult-to-Reach Surveying Points

In real-world surveying, not every point is easy to reach.

Riversides, steep slopes, uneven terrain, obstacles, and other challenging environments can make it difficult or even impractical for surveyors to place a GNSS receiver directly over the point they need to measure.

That is where laser measurement can provide an important advantage.

Field-Tested with X5 in Colombia

During a recent field test in Colombia, our local partner Vertex Ingeniería tested the laser measurement capability of the SpatiX X5 GNSS receiver in a riverside environment.

The site presented a common surveying challenge: uneven ground and the water’s edge made several target points difficult to access directly.

Instead of physically reaching each point with the GNSS pole, the surveying team used the X5 laser measurement function to aim at the target from a more accessible position and capture the required point.

This approach helped the team work around the terrain while maintaining a more flexible measurement workflow.

 

 

Measure Points That Are Difficult to Reach

Traditional GNSS surveying often requires the receiver to be positioned directly over the point being measured. While this works well in many environments, some field conditions make direct access difficult.

With laser measurement integrated into the X5, surveyors can have another option when direct access is not practical.

The workflow can be particularly useful for:

  • Points near rivers, shorelines, and water edges
  • Slopes and uneven terrain
  • Points behind obstacles
  • Areas where direct access is inconvenient or unsafe
  • Surveying locations where placing a GNSS pole directly on the point is difficult

Rather than letting challenging terrain dictate the surveying workflow, the laser measurement capability gives surveyors greater flexibility in how they approach the point.

Practical GNSS Surveying for Real-World Conditions

Field surveying rarely happens in perfectly accessible environments. The ability to adapt to changing terrain and site conditions can make a significant difference in productivity.

The SpatiX X5 combines high-precision GNSS positioning with integrated laser measurement, giving surveyors an additional tool for capturing points when direct measurement is challenging.
